Smyrna Farmers Market Open Saturday Mornings Through September
By RobertKohl | June 24, 2009
On the hunt for that PERFECT watermelon? Or some of the suggestions from
the “20 Healthiest Foods for under $1″ article we posted last week? Then swing by Smyrna’s Fresh Farmer’s Market in the First Baptist Church parking lot adjacent to the Market Village. The market is open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon through September.
“We have not had a well-established source for locally grown food here in Smyrna, particularly organic food,” says Ann Kirk, director of Keep Smyrna Beautiful. “It saves energy and resources to support local growers, it is great for the local economy, and the food just tastes better!”
For more information, visit the City of Smyrna’s website.

Free Movies for Kids This Summer at Regal Cinemas
By DinaG | June 24, 2009
I just heard about this from a neightbor of mine (we live in a Monte Hewett
neighborhood in Smyrna) - Free morning movies for kids at many Regal Cinemas! Regal Cinemas (Regal Entertainment Group) has an annual program called Free Family Film Festival where kids and their parents can go see movies during 9 weeks of the summer for FREE!
Selected G & PG movies start at 10AM each Tuesday and Wednesday during the festival. First-come, first-served seating is limited to theatre capacity. What a great way for kids to spend a weekday morning in the summer. For more info and to find a theatre in your area, visit the Regal Family Fun Festival page on their website.
My neighbor also mentioned that an AMC theatre is doing something similar, but I couldn’t find any information about it on their site. If anyone knows more, please post a comment!
I know where we’ll be next Tuesday morning! I hope there’s a good flick playing…

The 20 Healthiest Foods for Under $1
By DinaG | June 15, 2009
Everyone is trying to pinch pennies where they can, especially with the cost of foods on the rise. Choosing lower cost food items doesn’t have to mean packaged or low quality choices only. In fact, some of the most inexpensive things you can buy are the best things for you. The trick is shopping on the periphery of the store near the fruits and veggies, the meat and dairy, and the bulk grains, while avoiding the more expensive interior isles. By doing so, not only will your kitchen be stocked with excellent foods, your wallet won’t be empty.
Here some of the most inexpensive, yet healthiest, foods you can buy:
- Oats
- Eggs
- Kale
- Potatoes
- Apples
- Nuts
- Bananas
- Broccoli
- Garbonzo Beans
- Watermelon
- Wild Rice
- Beets
- Butternut Squash
- Whole Grain Pasta
- Sardines
- Spinach
- Tofu
- Lowfat Milk
- Pumpkin Seeds
- Coffee
For the “whys” and “wherefores” for each item on the list and for cooking tips , read the Full Article from Womenco.com
