It’s COLD in Atlanta, Have You Covered Your Outside Faucets?

By DinaG | January 7, 2010

Here in the ATL we’re gearing up for the “S” word tonight – so here’s a quick reminder of a few things to do to prepare for the freezing nights.

Protect outside pipes and faucets. In some homes, the outside faucet has a separate shut-off in the FrostKing faucet cover available at Home Depotbasement. If you have a separate valve for outside faucets, shut if off. Then go outside and turn on all the faucets to drain water in the lines.

Drain your in-ground irrigation systems. Check your manufacturer’s manual (do you rememebr where you stashed that?) for specific instructions for your system

Wrap outside faucets or hose bibs. You shoud do this for sure if you don’t have a separate valve to turn off outside faucets, but I tend to do it anyway – it can’t hurt! Home Depot or Lowes have then molded styrofoam covers that latch on with a band for under $1. (Also remember to disconnect garden hoses.) You can also use newspaper or rags covered with plastic.

Looking forward to a fire in the fireplace? Is your chimney ready?

By DinaG | November 30, 2009

The cold weather is about to roll in, and cozying up to a nice fireplacewarm fire in your fireplace can be a pleasure. But having a fireplace (and the chimney that goes with it) means that you have some homeowner responsibilities too!

The best plan is to inspect and clean your chimney at least once a year (unless you never use it of course!) Soot and creosote will build up on the flue and walls over time and can be very dangerous if not removed. Creosote is a tarry substance that can be highly flammable. I have witnessed a chimney fire in person at my uncle’s home, and it is scary stuff. Fire department had to be called, but thankfully they were able to put the fire out before any structural damage was done to the house. Inside, the family room was covered in soot and everything had to be professionally cleaned. Yuck.

How often you need to clean your chimney really depends on the type of wood you are burning – softwoods create more creosote than hardwoods. The bottom line is to just be aware and inspect the chimney periodically. Of course you don’t have to do the job yourself, that’s what a good chimney sweep is for!
